Prayer
of Confession * O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable
sinner, confess unto Thee all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended Thee and justly deserved Thy temporal
and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray Thee
of Thy boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Thy beloved Son, Jesus Christ,
to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.
from Psalm 51 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take
not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation: and uphold me with a free spirit.
By Dietrich BonhoefferO God, early in the morning I cry to you. Help me to pray And
to concentrate my thoughts on you: I cannot do this alone. In me there is darkness, But with you there is light; I am lonely, but you do not leave me; I am feeble in heart, but with you there is help; I am restless, but with
you there is peace. In me there is bitterness, but with you there is patience; I do not understand your ways, But you know the way for me… Restore me to liberty, And enable me to live now That I may answer before
you and before me. Lord, whatever this day may bring, Your name be praised.
A prayer for courage Lord God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the
ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not
knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.
A Simple Way to Pray Martin Luther recommends that Christians pray the Ten Commandments, Apostles’ Creed
and Lord’s Prayer. Yet beyond reciting these traditional texts, he suggests that after each line or phrase of
these texts we meditate upon them in a “four-fold garland” method of praying:
Instruction: seek what these words have to teach you; Thanksgiving: give thanks for these words and the goodness
of God conveyed through them; Confession:
humbly confess to God your failure to live up to or accept these words; Prayer: pray for help and strength to embrace these words.
The Morning and Evening Blessing Under the care of God the Father,
+ Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. The Ten Commandments (Exodus 1 - 21)
And God spoke all these words: “I am the
LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before
me. “You shall not make for yourself
an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5
You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the
sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love
to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who
misuses his name. “Remember the Sabbath day by
keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10
but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter,
nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11
For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day.
Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. “Honor
your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. “You shall not murder. “You shall not commit adultery. “You
shall not steal. “You shall not give false
testimony against your neighbor. “You shall not
covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or
donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled
with fear. They stayed at a distance 19 and said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we
will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.” Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with
you to keep you from sinning.” The people remained
at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was. Exodus 1 - 21. The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus
Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born
of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and
was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and
he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic
church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord's Prayer Our
Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not
into temptation and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours forever and ever. Amen.
Scripture may be read.
Prayers for the church, the world, those in need, may be offered, concluding with the appropriate prayer:
For Mornings We give thanks to you, heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ your dear Son, that you have protected
us through the night from all harm and danger. We ask that you would also protect us today from sin and all evil, so that
our life and actions may please you. Into your hands we commend ourselves: our bodies, our souls, and all that is ours. Let
your holy angels be with us, so that the wicked foe may have no power over us. Amen.
For Evenings We give thanks to you, heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ your dear Son, that you have graciously protected us today.
We ask you to forgive us all our sins, where we have done wrong, and graciously to protect us tonight. Into your hands we
commend ourselves: our bodies, our souls, and all that is ours. Let your holy angels be with us, so that the wicked foe may
have no power over us. Amen.

The following prayers are
from the Lutheran Book of Worship. ~ Sickness.
O God, the strength of the weak and the comfort
of sufferers: Mercifully hear our prayers and grant to your servant the help of your power, this his/her sickness may be turned
into health and our anxiety into joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ~ Anxiety and Fear. O most loving
Father, you want us to give thanks for all things, to fear nothing except losing you, and to lay all our cares on you, knowing
that you care for us. Grant that fears and anxieties in this mortal life may not hide from us the light of your immortal love
shown to us in your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ~ Before Surgery. Loving God, hold name in your care. Give wisdom and skill
to his/her doctors and nurses, and enable them to serve your purposes of love and healing, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ~ Peace. O
God, it is your will to hold both heaven and earth in a single peace. Let the design of your great love shine on the waste
of our anger and sorrow, and give peace to your Church, peace among nations, peace in our homes, and peace in our hearts,
through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ~ The Poor and Neglected. Almighty and merciful God we call to mind before you all those whom it would
be easy to forget: the homeless, the destitute, the sick, the aged, and all who have none to care for them. Help us to heal
those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their sorrow into joy. Grant this, Father, for the love of your Son, who
for our sake became poor, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Mission of My Life God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me
which He has not committed to another. I have my mission. I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the
next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good; I shall
do His work. I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it if I do but keep His
commandments. Therefore, I will trust Him, whatever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may
serve Him, in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him. If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain.
He knows what He is about. He may take away my friends. He may throw me among strangers. He may make me feel desolate, make
my spirits sink, hide my future from me. Still, He knows what He is about. A Daily Prayer May He support
us all the day long, till the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life
is over, and our work is done. Then in His mercy may He give us a safe lodging, and a holy rest and peace at the last.
A Prayer My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot
know where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean
that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire
in all I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this, you will lead
me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore, I will trust you always, though I may seem to be lost
in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. (Thoughts
in Solitude) Serenity Prayer God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at
a time; accepting hardship as the pathway to peace. Taking as Jesus did this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it;
trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His will; that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely
happy with Him forever in the next. (Reinhold Niebuhr)
